Car rentals
A rental car gives you the freedom to reach the Pitons, the rainforest and quiet beaches on your own schedule. Two things to know before you drive: you need a temporary permit, and Saint Lucia drives on the left.
The temporary driving permit
Visitors need a Saint Lucia temporary driving permit. It costs about US$22 (EC$54) and is valid for three months, with a one-day option for around US$12. You can buy it at the rental agency or at airport immigration, on showing a valid licence from home and your passport. If your licence is not in English, bring an International Driving Permit.
Where to rent
International names such as Avis, Hertz, Budget and Sixt operate alongside trusted local firms. Many will deliver the car to your hotel or the airport. A small SUV is worth it for the steeper inland and west-coast roads.
Driving tips
- Roads are narrow, steep and winding, and often have deep edge drains. Take it slow.
- Keep left, especially when pulling out of junctions and after stops.
- Fuel up in towns; stations are scarce in the interior and on the south coast.
- Parking is tight in central Castries; use car parks and arrive early.
- The drive to Soufrière and the Pitons is beautiful but slow; budget extra time.
